Types of Cuts in Editing

  1. Standard Cut – A basic cut where one shot is immediately replaced by another.
  2. Jump Cut – A cut that creates a sudden jump in time, often used for stylistic or storytelling purposes.
  3. J Cut – The audio from the next scene starts before the visual transition.
  4. L Cut – The visual transition happens first, with the audio from the previous scene continuing.
  5. Cutting on Action – A cut that occurs in the middle of an action to create seamless movement.
  6. Cross-Cutting (Parallel Editing) – Cutting between two or more scenes happening simultaneously.
  7. Cutaway – A cut to a different shot that provides additional context.
  8. Montage – A sequence of short cuts used to show the passage of time or development.
  9. Match Cut – A cut where the composition, movement, or action in one shot is matched with the next shot.
