A cut is the transition between two shots, where one shot ends and the next begins. It is a fundamental editing technique used in both analog film editing and digital video editing.

Types of Cuts in Editing
- Standard Cut – A basic cut where one shot is immediately replaced by another.
- Jump Cut – A cut that creates a sudden jump in time, often used for stylistic or storytelling purposes.
- J Cut – The audio from the next scene starts before the visual transition.
- L Cut – The visual transition happens first, with the audio from the previous scene continuing.
- Cutting on Action – A cut that occurs in the middle of an action to create seamless movement.
- Cross-Cutting (Parallel Editing) – Cutting between two or more scenes happening simultaneously.
- Cutaway – A cut to a different shot that provides additional context.
- Montage – A sequence of short cuts used to show the passage of time or development.
- Match Cut – A cut where the composition, movement, or action in one shot is matched with the next shot.
