Cutting on action

Cutting on action, also known as matching on action, is an editing technique where the editor transitions from one shot to another while maintaining the continuity of motion. This creates a seamless flow of movement, making the cut feel natural and unnoticeable.

  • Ensures smooth transitions between shots.
  • Maintains the illusion of continuous time and space.
  • Often used in dynamic scenes like fights, chases, or movement-heavy sequences.

Example:
A boy running from left to right is first shown in a wide shot. The next cut shifts to a close-up of his legs or face while he continues running in the same direction, preserving the flow of movement.
