Ambient Light

Ambient light refers to the natural or pre-existing light in a scene before any artificial lighting is added. It is also known as “natural light” or “available light” and plays a crucial role in setting the mood and exposure of a shot.

Examples of Ambient Light:

☀️ Sunlight – The most common source of natural light.
🌙 Moonlight – Provides a soft, low-intensity illumination at night.
💡 Fixtures – Existing artificial lights, such as street lamps, indoor lighting, or vehicle headlights.

Uses of Ambient Light in Filmmaking:

  • Creates realistic and natural-looking scenes.
  • Helps maintain continuity with minimal artificial lighting.
  • Often used in documentaries, indie films, and low-budget productions to enhance authenticity.

Note: While ambient light is often desirable, filmmakers may use reflectors, diffusers, or additional lights to control its effect.
